Non intendo aggiungermi ai coretti dei pacifisti pelosi che sostengono che la violenza sia sempre sbagliata e magari tacevano quando durante il Ramadan l’esercito israeliano arrestava e picchiava i credenti sulla spianata delle Moschee e a Gerusalemme, di chi ha fatto finta di non vedere a Sheik Jarrah, di chi si è tappato la bocca di fronte all’ultimo attacco dell’aviazione su Gaza.

Questa situazione ha responsabili con precisi nomi e cognomi: i ministri che incitano a dissacrare i luoghi religiosi, che coprono i violenti espropri e le occupazioni dei coloni, che avallano pratiche sempre più discriminatorie e violente, dalle torrette automatiche ai checkpoint all’autorizzazione a sparare proiettili veri sulle manifestazioni, passando per le discriminazioni verso cristiani e musulmani e ai divieti di matrimonio interreligioso. Conosciamo però il carattere di Netanyahu e non coltivo alcuna illusione che questo accada – posso solo sperare che questo smuova lentamente la comunità globale (pronunciato con tono sarcastico) a riconsiderare il proprio appoggio a uno stato criminale che ha portato a questa situazione, attraverso pratiche fasciste, etno-nazionaliste e criminali, levando qualsiasi speranza ad un popolo spossessato della propria terra e del controllo sulla propria vita.

I learned about the Gaza military operation shortly after opening my eyes yesterday morning.
In the confused hours spent looking for reliable news, I realized that my heart was beginning to break more and more.

On the one hand, I felt surprise and admiration for such a desperately bold and successful action; on the other, the awareness of the bloodbath that will ensue started to creep in. Some say we are witnessing live decolonization; I am not so sure.

After the initial shock, Israel has begun to retaliate, and at the time of writing, the Israeli military response has already claimed more than 300 lives in Gaza, while the Palestinian attack has claimed as many casualties in Israel. I do not feel like celebrating this unexpected and surprising moment in history with triumphalist tones, nor with joy; this is the tailspin of a people driven to the brink over the years. A blaze, huge and sudden, generated from embers that Israel attempts, with often unheard-of brutality, to smother.

My solidarity goes out to the Palestinian people and all the civilians who are suffering in these hours the consequences of the brutal, inhumane and extremely violent practices carried out by the Israeli state. I do not intend to join the choruses of the slick pacifists who claim that violence is always wrong and perhaps were silent when the Israeli army was arresting and beating believers on the Esplanade of Mosques and in Jerusalem during Ramadan, who pretended not to see in Sheik Jarrah, who kept their mouths shut in the face of the latest air strike on Gaza.

Israel never ceases to lay its cards on the table and continues to increase the pressure on its own Palestinian population and on the inhabitants of the Occupied Territories, increasingly eroding and torching at will their hopes for a modicum of normalcy. No surprise if the pressure cooker explodes at some point.
My solidarity goes out to the Palestinian people, who are doubly prey to a state that would like to erase their existence and to corrupt and autocratic leadership – Hamas is not too shy about silencing internal dissent and authoritarianly directing Gaza’s civil and political life.

My heart is split between the pain that gives me imagining what the crackdown will look like and the hope that at least this blaze will help to lift the living conditions of the inhabitants of the Occupied Territories, and some day end an apartheid that has lasted far too long.
We know Netanyahu’s character, however, and I harbor no illusions that this will happen – I can only hope that this will slowly push the global community (pronounced in a sarcastic tone) to reconsider its support for a criminal state that has brought about this situation, through fascist, ethno-nationalist and criminal practices, stealing all hope from a people dispossessed of their land and control over their lives.

As always, the word is one: against all states and flags, peace among the oppressed. And death to the oppressors.
